Other Places Worth Skulking Around

The Shady Dell
The rooms in this sweet little motel are made up entirely of vintage, restored trailers (think airstream). Stepping into one of these is like stepping into a time machine.

Caliente Tropics Hotel
This is a bona-fide tiki hotel from the 50’s. Located in Palm Springs, California, it features a really fantastic pool and the best hawaiian BBQ I’ve ever had.

Arkiva Tropica

This neat-o site catalogs all things tiki. Vintage pieces such as tiki restaurant menus, mug designs, etc all get deftly archived and commented on.

Critiki
In the words of Critiki, the site is “A Worldwide Guide to over 600 Tiki Bars, Polynesian Restaurants, and other sites of interest to the midcentury Polynesian Pop enthusiast.”

This community documents all things midcentury modern in the Valley of the Sun.

Lou Romano/
Lou Romano is one of the Pixar artists and did a lot of design work for The Incredibles. He also happens to have a great blog with lots of his art.

Don Shank
Ditto on Don Shank. He’s friends with Lou Romano and also has a noteworthy midcentury asthetic.

Shag
Shag is a prolific painter of all things lounge. His brightly-colored screenprints capture a very specific lifestyle.

The Superest
This is a daily read. Two artists battle each other for superhero supremacy. Each in turn sketches a superhero that cancels out the powers of the last.

Drawn!
Another daily read. Drawn is constantly updated with the best links to interesting painters, illustrators, sketchbooks, etc.
